Modella Gallery is pleased to present Dehart & duBois, a compilation of work by two Oklahomans artist, Brian Dehart and ceramicist, Ron duBois.

For Tulsa artist, Brian Dehart, these grayscale drawings combine portrait-type figures with abstract forms. The drawings are created with digital and physical tools. “The figures were drawn from my imagination or photographs. They were manipulated using photo editing software. Drips, splatters and other extemporaneous marks are often added to a drawing with an inkjet printer. Additions were also made with charcoal, graphite and drawing ink; subtractions—which were often extensive—were made with sandpaper and erasers. Many drawings are photographed, digitally manipulated, reprinted and reworked again. These drawings contrast my interest in the materialistic nature of artworks—especially in the physicality of the materials and processes used to create them—with my interest in certain immaterial aspects including representation, illusion and pictorial space, Dehart said. The work reflects my fondness and unease with objective figuration and nonobjective abstraction. Dehart received his MFA from Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, in 2000, and a BFA from Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, OK, in 1997.

Ron duBois, Professor of Art Emeritus is a graduate of the California College of Arts and Crafts and of the University of California, Berkeley, CA. Until retirement in 1986, he taught ceramics at Oklahoma State University. In addition, he has filmed award winning documentaries on ceramics in Nigeria and Korea. duBois states, “This is my swan song. I am not exhibiting anymore after this show at Modella.” He says clay has tremendous educational value. “Someone can make a 3 inch clay pot and it becomes part of the malleable world, not unlike spiritual enlightenment. One goes from one stage to another becoming an epiphany.” To the 90 year-old ceramicist his pieces represent a purity in a visual form.
